BACKGROUND
iTrustRatings can provide an easy way to pre-screen Canadian income trust and fund investments for current quality and a track record of performance. There are two key dimensions in the iTrustRatings scheme to help distinguish relative performance and discern qualitative differences between trusts and funds:
7-Star iTrustRatings provide a set of potentially positive indicators for income trusts and funds. Our Web site features Top-Rate trusts or funds with 7 Stars of a possible seven including links to pricing data and, more importantly, background fundamental data. Issues that rate a full 7*Stars might be most worthy of consideration for potential investment by long term investors.
Cashflow Cautions that show a black mark to indicate Risk in so far as a trust or fund has experienced difficulties or is currently (recent quarter) experiencing challenges in cashflow management. This Caution relates to Risk of a cut-back in distributions, for example. And it can be attributed to any income issue regardless of the Star rating.
Through the downloadable iTrust Reports, subscribers can obtain access to ratings for all trusts and funds including Top-Rate trusts as well as trusts with considerable quality shown with a rating of 5 or 6 Stars of seven.
The iTrustRatings are based on specific measures and factors that can help raise questions and provide focus on basic data for investors and market observers in regard to consideration of returns and risks for investment in trusts and funds.
Designed to be complimentary to other sources of information, the iTrustRatings can provide a time-saving and effective initial indicator of potential value for investors, advisors, sellers, traders and fund managers. The iTrustRatings do not replace need for investors to do their own thorough investment research before investing, nor minimize need to make investments only in the context of well-informed and comprehensive financial planning.
At a minimum, however, iTrustRatings might help investors and advisors raise questions and preview basic securities information. The Ratings can assist in focusing research and decisions on meaningful measures related to potential returns & risks of investment.
For example, the iTrustRatings might provide a basic starting point for informed conversation by investors with their advisors or brokers when discussing inclusion of trusts or funds of funds in a portfolio. An opening question from an investor to a salesperson or advisor might be as simple as, "If you're recommending that I put money into this trust or fund, can you tell me its iTrustRatings and whether there is any Risk or Cashflow Caution?"
